necessary to begin building your company release.
ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is a generic system standard that specifies, in very broad
terms, the necessary components of a quality management system. Rather
than being specific to any one industry, it details the basic requirements
of the quality function for all industries. ISO 9001's primary purpose
is to provide organizations with useful internationally recognized models
for operating a quality management system. ISO 9001:2000 is the current
version of this standard.
ISO 9001 was originally published in 1987
by the International Organization for Standardization, a worldwide federation
of national standards bodies, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
The organization was founded in 1946 to develop a common set of standards
for manufacturing, trade and communications. Today more than 90 countries
are members, each with a representative. The representative for the
United States is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Currently
over 100,000 organizations in North America are certified to the ISO
9001 standard.
ISO 14001
ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized environmental management
system standard, similar in structure to the ISO 9001 quality management
system standard. ISO 14001 outlines several key requirements to which
companies should comply in order to operate in an environmentally responsible
manner. The five major elements of the environmental management system
requirements are Environmental Policy, Planning, Implementation and
Operations, Checking and Corrective Action, and Management Review. Some
of the advantages to be gained through the implementation of ISO 14001
include risk reduction, cost reductions and increased competitive advantages.
AS9100 rev. C
AS9100 is the quality management system specific to the aerospace industry.
The current version, AS9100 Rev. C, is the quality management system
specific to the industry. Version AS9100 Rev. C includes the ISO 9001:2000
standard verbatim. In addition, there are supplementary items that address
how the standard applies to the aerospace industry.
First published in May 1997 by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
as AS9000, the AS standard has evolved to AS9100 Rev. C and is recognized
by all major Aerospace OEMs.
- ISO/TS 16949
ISO/TS 16949 was designed to improve product and process quality, provide
additional confidence for global sourcing of supplier resources in regards
to quality improvement and offer a common quality system approach in
the supply chain for suppliers/subcontractors to develop consistency
and reduce multiple third party registrations.
The ISO/TS 16949:2002 standard (updated
from ISO 16949:1999 to incorporate the ISO 9001:2000 standard) was released
in March 2002. ISO/TS 16949 (TS-Technical Specifications) was originally
published in 1999 to create and promote harmonization of supplier quality
system requirements for the automotive industry. ISO/TS 16949 is a common
global registration scheme recognized by all participating organizations
of the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), which includes, but
not limited to, DaimlerChrysler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors
Corporation, BMW and Volkswagen.
- Canadian Medical
Devices Regulations
Canadian Law requires manufacturers of class II, III and IV medical
devices to have a quality management system that meets the requirements
of ISO 13485 in order to obtain a license to sell their
devices in Canada. Only an ISO 13485 certificate issued
by an SCC qualified CMDCAS Registrar will be accepted. TÜV Management
Service was the first SCC qualified ISO 13485 Registrar for the Canadian
Medical Devices Regulations.
Pressure Equipment
Directive
The Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC was originally published on
May 29, 1997 and became mandatory on May 29, 2002. Compliance to the
PED allows Pressure Equipment (Vessels, Piping, safety accessories etc.)
to be placed on, or put into service, in the European Union. The directive
addresses the safety and requirements of pressure equipment which material
suppliers and manufacturers must demonstrate compliance by displaying
the CE Marking on their product, allowing their products to be sold
in the European Union.
Noise Directive
The Outdoor Noise Directive 2000/14/EC establishes mandatory requirements
for the control of noise emissions from motorized equipment intended
for use outdoors. A consolidation of nine previous Noise Directives
targeting a broad array of equipment, from construction machinery to
lawnmowers, the Noise Directive will be phased in during two stages:
stage I noise emission levels became mandatory on January 3, 2002 and
stage II on January 3, 2006. To market such product
in the European Union manufacturers must demonstrate compliance to the
Noise Directive by displaying the CE Marking on their product.
